7 Quick Takes - Summertime, a Birthday, a Haircut, and DIY... Always DIY

Linking up with Kelly for 7 Quick Takes Friday!

1.
June (who's napping next to me finally, which means I get to write this post) turned 3 this past weekend!
She had such a fun BATMAN family gathering
Sometimes it seems just like yesterday we brought her home from the hospital -
Father's Day 3 years ago - June was a peanut and Addie Jo such a baby still!
And other days, it seems like she's been here recking havoc forever -

2.
Addie Jo, at 4, has yet to have a haircut (other than a little trim from grandma awhile back):

So it was definitely long over due for a cut; but, after the pool one night this week, when it was a rats' nest, I had to chop it.
She actually wanted it cut and was fine with it. I, on the other hand, was pretty sad!  All the light baby hair that she's had forever was gone!  Haha... she'd probably say, It's just hair, MOM!

3.
Summer!
We've had a pretty uneventful summer so far - my perfect idea of summer, actually!
Crafts-
Strawberry Picking!

Mornings on the front porch -
Playing with Sophie, our neighbor!

Swimming and eating snacks at grandma and grandpa's pool, too!

4.
I recently posted the final part of the stairwell makeover.
And I have officially decided it was worth it! ;)
If you'd like to see the BEFORE and AFTER pics, click here!

5.
A few months ago when Bill sanded down the used headboard I bought and then I stained it in white wash, Addie Jo told me I should paint the whole thing white.
I guess she was right because I had to get my paintbrush out one day during naps and paint over the stain...
It wasn't too bad initially, but a little "off" nonetheless... the wood read a little "pinky."

So SW Alabaster to the rescue!
I think I'll keep it like this for now!

6.
It took a little while but I posted the SOURCE LIST to the girls' bedroom this week.  So if you want to know where I bought or found something in their room, you can see it here.

We moved June's dollhouse that she got for her birthday into the reading corner.  I'm glad I bought it used but it takes up a TON of space!
It might just disappear soon... I said MIGHT ;)!

7.
And lastly, go give Colleen, who is pregnant with her 7th!!! (and 6th boy) some love at Martin Family Moments.  She is awesome (and my favorite blogger), and would love to have you stop by!

Happy Father's Day weekend everyone!

Sea Salt Toddler Bedroom SOURCE LIST

I wanted to share our girls' bedroom SOURCE LIST after sharing some pictures of their room a couple of weeks ago.  I'm sure there will be many modifications and additions along the way, but for now, this is where I'm okay stopping... for now anyways, haha!

I was so excited to put the girls' room together but not thrilled about how much I knew it was going to cost!

I pride myself on being a thrifty shopper, garage sale hunter, and "re-user" of things we already have around the house; but since we had a timeline of when we would be living in the house, I didn't have a lot of time to "collect" things for the girls' room before they had to sleep in there.  I didn't even have time to find two old twin bed frames to paint!  I was too busy with baby Trip and then trying to get the house livable in a few short months.

A few of the items we did have or were thrifted or found at garage sales, but there were a lot of big ticket items we didn't have, like I said.

I also wasn't able to use anything from their old bedroom because it was all the baby furniture that would go into Trip's room.  We were able to save on a couple of items, though - my parents gave us the headboards and Bill's mom gave us the antique brown dresser, which we are so thankful for - but we didn't have anything else!  So this room was like starting from scratch in a lot of ways.

*Trip's room on the other hand, we only had to buy paint, sheets, curtains, and a light fixture; everything else we had!

I wanted the girls' room to be light and airy, simple and cozy, and I think that's how it turned out!  The room is 13'x14' and the paint color is Sherwin Williams Sea Salt
Check their room reveal post for other paint colors and to read how much I love Sea Salt.  Ha!

*Source links are listed at the bottom of post, as in addition to some throughout the post.*

Bed Frames and Mattresses: Overstock
White Quilts: Overstock

Headboards (Pier 1) were given to us by mom and dad. I left the whicker part underneath as is but chalk painted the top parts white.  These were the first things I ever chalk painted... and once you start, it's hard to put the brush down!!!

Horse PrintOverstock
Small Colorful Pillows, Ralph Lauren, Homegoods

The bought the materials for the banners at Joann's, and I used this tutorial (no sew).
I like switching them out depending on the season.

White Dresser: Ikea (handles on dresser: Lowe's)

The wood A & J letters were the most expensive things on the gallery wall ($7 - Homegoods - I screamed in the store when I found both letters!!!); the white mirror was $3 at a garage sale and the frames and prints were $3 or less... all the frames are Goodwill or Ikea.
The girls picked out the plant on our trip to Ikea and the compass with pink sand at World Market. We chalk painted some mason jars to use as vases on the shelf.

Wood Sign on gallery wall: House of Belonging:

Proverbs 31:25.  I'd love to put another sign above their beds after I save up!
The mirrors above it are all Goodwill, some spray painted.  I fell over when I found the long skinny one in bronze that fit perfectly at the top.
See the chandelier in the mirror?  A splurge for a little girls' room but it was something I was willing to splurge on!
Chandelier and ceiling medallion: Amazon

The Ikea spice racks I painted white to use as book shelves.

I love the birdcage hanging from tule.  I found it for $5.
Metal Butterflies were thrifted for $1 then spray painted.
Birdies from Pier1 clearance a few years back (I think $1.35 a piece)

I found an old window that I wanted to use in their room but Bill thought it would be best to knock the glass out first because no one wants 100 year old glass to shatter on them!
My Dad's heat gun came in handy to take the old glaze out to then get the glass out-

I wore gloves! ;)

The antique dresser that Bill's mom gave us used to be his aunt Jean's - darling!
And then lastly, the antique corner chair - $10 at Goodwill.  It has great bones and even though I can't afford to reupholster it now, the green and gold fabric works just fine!

June Turns 3!!!

"The moment I saw you,
I knew an adventure
was going to happen."

June Mercedes Turns 3!

A few weeks ago, June decided she wanted to have a princess cake for her third birthday:

Then the week before her birthday, she changed her mind - from Princess to Batman.

She was very clear that she wanted a black batman party (Dark Knight as opposed to the old school blue batman I assumed).

She was probably thinking Christian Bale:

was a better Batman than this guy -

I can't say I blame her (not that she's even seen any Batman movies, of course!!!)! ;)

But she was adamant that she wanted the black batman (the old school one is everywhere now), so I made a couple of handmade posters and hung a few balloons to bring the black in!

I tried to get a sibling shot while Trip was sitting still -

I had to throw a black batman on the cake to try to distract her from all the blue!
And I made sure the table was black with a little yellow and blue on the ends -
Side note - Trip likes pizza!
Woo Hoo!
Then it was present hugging time:

Poor Trip!
Taking down Trip!
She was pretty serious about her cake (probably looking for the black batman) -

And then the kiddos stayed cool in the 95% heat by playing in the water!

She thought she was pretty cool being the birthday girl the whole day and it was really cute!

Oh Junie, your BIG personality, zeal for life, and willingness to try anything makes us fall more in love with you every day!
At 3, you love to sing songs (and somehow know all the words to so many of them), snuggle, play make believe, ride your bike, dig in the dirt, dress up, play with dolls, build, color, and anything, really!
Oh yea, and you always try to keep up with Addie, who at only 17 months older, loves being your BIG sister! You look up to her and try to emulate her all the time!  You're inseparable!

You're always up for an adventure and you make our life a great adventure because you're in it!

Happy 3rd Birthday, Junie Bug!!!
We love you more than we know how to put into words and you will always have a most special place in our lives!
xoxo, Mom, Dad, Addie, And Trippy
